COVID-19 Update As a result of the recent outbreak of COVID-19, the Jersey Shore Running Club is monitoring the situation with public health officials to follow and implement measures dictated by health agencies and governments. We will continue to take appropriate actions on an event-by-event basis, following the decisions made by these respective authorities and agencies. Additional information will be shared with members, athletes and our partners as appropriate and will be made available on specific event pages and social media accounts. We ask you to stay updated with respect to the impact of the outbreak in your location, follow governmental and agency recommendations to minimize risk, and follow any potential restrictions put in place. Anyone traveling for competition purposes should make themselves familiar with respective national and world health organization updates in those locations as well as travel policies from airlines and hotels. As always, athletes should monitor their personal health appropriately and not race or travel to any event if they are unwell. Athletes are also reminded to practice hygiene protection measures recommended by the WHO . For up-to-date information on COVID-19 restrictions in New Jersey Click Here . If a Race is Cancelled or Postponed - Don’t Be a Jerk In the March 14th, 2020 New York Times there is an interesting article that the club thought we would share with our members. We know that many of our members and runners in the community have trained hard for races of various distances. Below is an excerpt that it is important to keep in mind until the COVID-19 lock down is lifted. We all need to be patient and remain good run citizens and let the the towns, race directors and state and county departments sort all of this out. So, please read below and do you best to comply: Don't Be a Jerk. Social Media: Don’t tweet in all caps at the event’s Twitter account. Don’t post nasty comments on their Facebook page. If you’re awaiting word on whether the race you’ve entered will be run, don’t berate the race director. Don’t take out your frustration on people who are, no doubt, just as upset as you are that they had to cancel their event. Please keep this in mind: Most events don’t offer refunds. It’s not really going to help to scream at them about that, either. If you signed up for the race, you agreed to this. Again, it’s OK to be mad (see above), but don’t take it out on the race directors who have been put in a difficult position. When the Long Beach Island Commemorative 18 Mile Run was canceled in October because of predicted flooding in the Jersey Shore towns where the race is held, people left furious comments on the race’s Facebook page. The race is put on by a local Catholic church. People were yelling at a church. What does this accomplish? Nothing. Click Here to read the entire article from March 14th in the New York Times. Recap of March 5th “Not Today” Attackiversary Group Run On Thursday, March 5th, 2020 the Jersey Shore Running Clubs held a speciai "Attackiversary" event and group run to commemorate the assault on club member Kelly Herron. On March 5, 2017, Kelly Herron was assaulted while training for her first marathon in Washington state. She fought back using skills she learned in a self-defense class and trapped her assailant until police arrived. Kelly’s Instagram post of her GPS lines tracking the encounter went viral, attracting worldwide attention. Women around the world were inspired to fight back - whether it be against assault or even against someone who is underestimating them. Through Not Today, Kelly continues to promote runner safety, personal protection and other forms of badassery. Her advocacy efforts have landed her on the November cover of Runners' World and she also stars in their documentary entitled, "Not Today", which premiers on March 12th in Chicago and will have an upcoming viewing dates locally. The JSRC was proud to have supported Kelly’s efforts around runner safety by promoting this special event. Thank you to all of those that attended including JSRC and She Runs! members. Stay tuned for future Not Today promoted events. Click Here for more information about Kelly’s journey in the February 10th, Asbury Park Press feature article.
